Part of the mission of SOHI is to promote literacy amongst indigenous tribes. At
the SOHI Kubwa District in Abuja (an Igbo District), out of 65 members only 2
were literate in Igbo language while 4 others could barely read Igbo. It became
imperative that teaching of Igbo alphabets, numerals and reading be introduced,
with the goal of getting every member able to count properly and read the Igbo
Bible by the end of the year.
Following the successful thesis: Promoting And Preserving The African Cultural
Heritage As A Panacea For Socio-Economic Development Of Nigeria; Challenges,
Solutions And Recommendations, which was adjudged to have been the best in her
set, May Ikokwu was made a fellow of the Institute of Humanitarian Studies and
Social Development.
SOHI JABI DISTRICT (an Igbo District) has membership of about 35 members over
the age of 30, the oldest being 84 years old, and about 50 members being
children, the youngest being 2 years old. At this meeting, the Non-Governmental
Organization (NGO) SOHI distributed palliatives to all members, irrespective of the
age. The things given out included Rice, Spaghetti, Beans, Salt, Mineral drinks
apart from the usual items used for entertainment at meetings. Palliatives were
normally provided quarterly.
Regular meetings of SOHI KUBWA DISTRICT took place on the last Saturdays of
the month. As a result of COVID-19 protocol, the meetings were held outdoors,
where members were seated with reasonable distancing from one another. The
meetings usually commenced with the Word of God, thereafter demonstrating
knowledge of Proverbs and their morals, Riddles, Tongue twisters and Folktales.
Proverbs are extremely important, because they complement speeches through
embellishment and are said to be “the oil used for eating (lubricating) words.”
The SOHI KUBWA DISTRICT came into being on this 13th day of June 2020 as retired staff of Julius Berger Company living in disputed quarters of the company in Kubwa, Abuja, were identified as a group that needed aid during the harsh COVID-19 lockdown. The inhabitants of the quarters, mainly Igbos, had not been paid any retirement benefits since 1999 and were still in court with Julius Berger for their rights to continue living in the quarters until their retirement benefits have been paid. It provided an opportunity to progress Igbo culture while supplying palliatives to the community. The inaugural meeting had about 65 persons with most of them being above 50 years and the youngest being 35 years old.
The world is a melting pot of cultures, each with its unique heritage, history, and customs. These cultures shape our identity and serve as a lens through which we view the world. However, in today’s rapidly changing world, many cultures are at risk of disappearing, and with them, an important part of our shared human history. This is where organizations like Save Our Heritage Initiatives (SOHI) come in, dedicating themselves to preserving and protecting endangered cultures.
SOHI is an NGO based in Nigeria that is focused on the preservation of the cultures of endangered peoples. The organization believes that it is the responsibility of every ethnic group to ensure the preservation of their heritage, or else the traces of their existence on planet Earth will be wiped out. SOHI works towards the documentation, preservation, and promotion of endangered cultures through various initiatives, such as cultural festivals, exhibitions, workshops, and publications.
