SOHI- Preserving Endangered Cultures

The world is a melting pot of cultures, each with its unique heritage, history, and customs. These cultures shape our identity and serve as a lens through which we view the world. However, in today’s rapidly changing world, many cultures are at risk of disappearing, and with them, an important part of our shared human history. This is where organizations like Save Our Heritage Initiatives (SOHI) come in, dedicating themselves to preserving and protecting endangered cultures.

SOHI is an NGO based in Nigeria that is focused on the preservation of the cultures of endangered peoples. The organization believes that it is the responsibility of every ethnic group to ensure the preservation of their heritage, or else the traces of their existence on planet Earth will be wiped out. SOHI works towards the documentation, preservation, and promotion of endangered cultures through various initiatives, such as cultural festivals, exhibitions, workshops, and publications.

The importance of SOHI’s work cannot be overstated. Culture and heritage play a vital role in shaping our identities and connecting us to our past. They provide us with a sense of belonging and help us understand our place in the world. They also serve as a bridge between generations, connecting us to our ancestors and the traditions that have been passed down through the ages.

Preserving endangered cultures also has immense cultural, economic, and social benefits. Cultures are not just a source of identity and pride; they also generate revenue through tourism and cultural exchanges. Preserving endangered cultures helps to create job opportunities, boost local economies, and promote cultural diversity. It also helps to foster a sense of unity and understanding among different groups, promoting social cohesion and reducing tensions.

Unfortunately, many cultures are threatened by modernization, globalization, and other factors. The pressures of modern life often cause younger generations to abandon their traditions and adopt more “modern” ways of life. As a result, many endangered cultures are at risk of disappearing, taking with them a wealth of knowledge, practices, and beliefs that have been developed over generations.

This is why organizations like SOHI are so important. By working to preserve endangered cultures, SOHI is not only protecting the cultural heritage of Nigeria, but also promoting cultural diversity and understanding among different groups. They are also helping to create a more inclusive and equitable society, where every culture is respected and valued.

The work of Save Our Heritage Initiatives (SOHI) is of immense importance in today’s world, where many cultures are at risk of disappearing. By working to preserve endangered cultures, SOHI is not only protecting the cultural heritage of Nigeria, but also promoting cultural diversity, creating job opportunities, boosting local economies, and promoting social cohesion. It is the responsibility of every one of us to support such initiatives and help protect the world’s cultural heritage for generations to come.

About Our Organisation

Save Our Heritage Initiative (SOHI) was registered with Corporate Affairs Commission, of Nigeria on the Nineteenth day of June 2012 as a Non-Governmental Organization to address the issues of our vanishing cultures, fern and fauna. While older persons are the custodians of our culture, it is the responsibility of all tiers of government to ensure the protection and preservation of our fern and fauna.
In order to preserve culture and language, SOHI partners with willing communities, working with the older persons in the community to document folktales, music, customs and artefacts of the people, among others.
In the process of collecting and collating information about a community, SOHI lectures the people about preservation of their language rather than giving way to the dominant language in the area to overwhelm theirs.
